Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital’s Cancer Program Earns Important Accreditation     01-24-2008

Auburn, CA | January 24, 2008 - On January 23, the Commission on Cancer, a multidisciplinary program of the American College of Surgeons, gave Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital a full three-year accreditation approval with commendation for its cancer program - the highest distinction possible.

"This is a tremendous milestone for our cancer services at Sutter Auburn and testament to the hard work and dedication shown by our staff toward creating a solid, reputable program," said Barton Bradshaw, M.D., chair of SAFH's Cancer Committee. "This designation is a symbol of the quality of care we provide our patients."

Experienced health care professionals from the Commission on Cancer visited SAFH last November to perform the voluntary survey. In their evaluation, the Commission examined institutional and programmatic resources; cancer data management and cancer registry operations; clinical management; research; community outreach; professional education and staff support; and quality improvement. SAFH's cancer program did not receive any deficiencies and received commendations in several areas including outcome analysis; patient guidelines; prevention and early detection; and cancer-related improvements.

It is estimated that Commission-approved programs annually diagnose and treat 80 percent of all new cancer cases. According to the Commission, this statistic emphasizes the level of commitment to resources that Commission-approved programs make to the care of patients with cancer.

Since its inception in 1922, the Commission's goal has been to reduce morbidity and mortality of cancer through education, standard setting and the monitoring of quality care. Beginning in the 1930s, the Commission established standards and a program of review and approval for cancer programs. Approximately 1,500 facilities have gained approval of their cancer programs. The standards continue to promote and support multidisciplinary care and improvements to overall quality.
