Sutter Auburn Confirms Commitment to Local Women’s and Children’s Services     04-17-2008

Auburn, Calif. - With two of the three Auburn-based obstetricians leaving the community effective July 1, Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital leaders and Sutter physician leaders have affirmed their commitment to continue providing high-quality, stable and efficient inpatient and outpatient OB/GYN services in Auburn. Sutter Health will aggressively recruit replacement physicians to practice in Auburn.

"We want to continue providing Auburn area residents with access to outstanding women's health services close to home," said Mitch Hanna, Sutter Auburn's Chief Administrative Officer.

Hanna said the Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region Board of Trustees, which provides governance to Sutter affiliates in Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties, met early this week to discuss the matter and authorized an immediate and very aggressive effort to recruit qualified physicians.

"If we are able to recruit qualified providers before the departure of our existing physicians, we will be in a strong position to continue working on sustaining our women's health services at a volume level that supports high-quality care," Hanna said. "We are committed to doing everything possible in order to maintain an inpatient Family Birth Center at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital."

Should inpatient volume decline, then Sutter will work to manage a smooth transition of inpatient OB services from Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, he added. This transition would include efforts to recruit new physicians to provide outpatient services in Auburn and inpatient OB services in Roseville.

Over the past few years, the Auburn community has had a particularly difficult time attracting and retaining OB/GYN physicians. The relatively low number of births in Auburn restricts the need for many OB/GYNs in the community. This situation creates an environment where a few physicians must share more frequent call coverage, imposing a strain on those physicians.

"We are working hard to ensure the appropriate level of services to the communities we serve, and Sutter Health remains committed to the safe, high-quality care provided by our physicians and Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital," said Hanna.
